Latest Owl Happenings

As you well know, I knit owls...and it makes me happy.  I keep coming up with ideas and I'm discovering that the possibilities are endless.  That is what is so neat about crafting and creating.  Once I get an idea or an inspiration my brain begins to work.  Recently, Nancy my friend and ex circulation manager at Mint Hill Branch Library said Emma and Marie had requested a purple owl and a blue owl.  Nancy is Emma's and Marie's grandmothers.

Chloe and Zoe were made my special request.  They were knitted using bright cotton yarn which I'm sure the girls will love.  The girls also requested hats, so I designed the newsboy cap.  I added the purses.  Girl owls need purses, don't you agree?

I have redesigned the talons and Chloe had surgery this morning.  The owls stand up on their own.

Remember the bright eyed blue eyed owl I was working on?
He is finished.  I name him Theo and he is ready to go back to Owl school.  He wants to get wiser...lol.... He will soon be listed on my Etsy shop.  Theo is my first blue eyed owl.
Theo and I would like to wish all those going back to school and all the home school moms including my daughter all  the best.

Birds of a Feather

Take a peek at the blue eye Owl which is still a work in progress.
Here are some other winged knitted creatures....
Life size knitted bird.
Yellow Baby Bird.  Found this nest during our trip to Bryson City, NC.
Pink baby bird.
Blue Baby Bird. or Twitter Bird.
Tried to make a baby bird with feathers on top.
...not sure about those feathers on the top.

Just like the Lord provides for little winged creatures in real life, He will also provide for all your needs.
Man is God's prized creation.  He loves you.  Trust him with your life and welcome Him in your heart.  I did....

Owl I Phone Cozies

It's amazing how many things can be crafted to look like an owl. These cozies are specially made to accommodate the I-Phone. The bright colors will please people of all ages. My preferred yarn for these cozies is 100% cotton yarn. The beaks have been made using repurposed wool. I recommend hand washing these cozies and air drying.

The tweedy owl made with Sugar 'N Cream Twists is the first one of its kind made.
It's fun thinking of all the color combination. I really like purple an orange together.

These cozies were made by request for an Etsy buyer.  Thank you so much for your support.

Here Comes the Bride and Her Groom

I am very pleased with my latest owl creation a bride and her Owlgroom groom. This pair was worked using a double strand of my favorite cotton yarn I Love This Cotton and size 9 knitting needles.
The bride is petite measuring just over 3 inches.  Like all brides she gracefully wears a veil made out of Tulle.

The groom's boutonniere and beret have been made using upcycled wool.  He stands approximately 4 inches tall.  The groom and his bride have plans for an owlymoon and will be staying at the Hollow Log Lodge.  Feel free to send your wishes for this beautiful pair of knitted owls.

A Wee Owl With Message

This wee brown owl named Oliver was made at the request of a coworker. He is not only cute and is certain to warm up the heart of the recipient with the message he delivers -Always Owl-ways in my heart. He stands 3 inches tall and is pudgy just like all owls should be.

Oliver sports a wool beret which was made with upcycled wool.  Farewell little owl and keep your new owner happy.

A Wee Green Owl named Greeny

My daughter visited and brought a gift for me, a simply delicious New Zealand Merino handspun yarn from Jessie.  Jessie has recently come back to her Etsy shop.  She is in  the process of setting it up again.  I have purchased some wonderful all natural soaps from her shop.  This yarn she sent me feels wonderful to touch and the difference in weight that runs throughout creates a wonderful texture.

I think Greeny came out just as I had imagined.

Here is Greeny looking sharp wearing his all wool beret.  His anatomically correct talons allow him to stand on his own.

My Source of Inspiration

One of the advantages of working at the Library is being able to enjoy reading and looking at the illustrations in children's picture books.  I recently checked out The Cow That was the Best Moo-ther by Andy Cutbill and illustrated by Russell Ayto.

I fell in love with the chickens in this book and got to work...with my knitting needles.

Here's a sneak peak of my chicken rendition. He needs a waddle to look more like a chicken.

The chicken legs were made by knitting an i-cord.   Take a look at the anatomically correct chicken feet.  The G crochet hook came in handy.
That is all I can show you of this chicken work in progress. So far I'm pleased with the work.
This little eggplant color wee owl was created and made for a friend's graduating daughter.

This sweet mustard color owl with the rust color beak and talons makes me smile.  He is a tad chunkier than the graduation wee owl.  He is also two toned.  It has not been adopted yet.  When I give away my owls they come with an Adoption Certificate.

This little brown owl sports button eyes.  To add charm I enhanced his body and wings using the duplicate stitch.

I have tweaked Amy Gaine's bird pattern and come up with this cute knitted bird design.  This bird was made using my favorite cotton yarn: I Love This Cotton.

Blue bird sitting pretty on twig nest.

The final touches to the chicken will be completed soon......I also need to think of a name for my first chicken creation.

Bird Mania

I have enjoyed making birds from the Sugar 'n Cream book, Chicken Kitchen.  This book contains some of the patterns.  I was not able to find a link to the exact book where I got my patterns.

Speckled chicken is meant to be an egg cozy.  This one is sitting on a votive holder.  I modified the chicken legs since I did not like the pattern instructions.
Red hen sitting on a plastic Easter egg I bought at Target.  The wire thingy is a napkin ring.

I modified the pattern and came up with a chic.  It really is an over sized chic.  I also modified chic's and they are made doing slip stitches instead of single crochets.
Further shrinking the pattern and changing the wings produced this  little bird which seems to have an attitude.
This is Owly.  It was a little difficult to sew its button eyes.

The pattern and instructions for this little blue bird are published in the Cut Out and Keep Website.

A Happy Owl

This picture of one of my Owl cozies was sent to me by Lesley.  She is very happy with it too and it just really warmed my heart to get such a nice feedback.  Lesley does have an Etsy shop and I also share her love for paper ephemera.  So I'm thinking when the owl is not fulfilling its duties to protect the cell phone, it can just be used to decorate any little corner of your house.  Thank you Lesley.

Speaking of owls....Most of them have sold and the only penguin I had listed has already been shipped.  I found these bright buttons and discovered they will look great to secure the cozy's strap.  It's great to finally find a use for these bright buttons.
The bright green buttons match owly's eyes.
I have already selected the yarn I will use for the Blackberry Cozy that a friend has commissioned me to make. I'm just tickled that she would like a monkey.
...so stay tuned....Monkey Blackberry Cozy coming soon....
